This chapter presents a "grand tour" of your Satellite computer, including illustrations to guide you along your way. This chapter serves as a reference for locating specific parts of the computer.
The diskette drive allows you to use 3.5-inch diskettes to store your work or install software. For information on using diskettes, see Using diskettes.
The display panel is the pivoting upper half of the computer that contains the screen and the display latch.
The security lock slot allows you to attach the optional PORT Noteworthy« Computer Lock cable to the computer to secure it to a large, heavy object such as your desk.
Pressing the power button turns the computer on or off.
The power button lock prevents you from accidentally turning the computer on or off. Sliding the power button lock to the right allows you to use the power button.
The PC Card lock allows you to secure your PC Cards in the PC Card slots.
The CardBus-ready PC Card slots allow you to connect PCMCIA-compatible devices to your Satellite computer. These slots can accommodate two Type I or Type II PC Cards, or one Type III PC Card. For more information, see Using PC Cards.
Pressing the reset button allows you to restart the computer when it is not responding to the keyboard. The reset button overrides the Stand by command and Resume Mode. Only use the reset button when all other attempts at restarting the computer have failed.
The PC Card ejection buttons enable you to easily remove PC Cards from their slots.
The integrated modem port allows you to connect a standard telephone cable to the computer.
The DC IN socket allows you to connect the AC adapter to the computer. For more information, see Connecting the AC adapter.
The monitor port allows you to connect an external monitor to the computer.
The serial port allows you to connect a serial device such as a mouse or serial printer, to the computer.
The port replicator connector allows you to connect the computer to the optional docking solution.
The fan prevents the computer's central processing unit (CPU) and internal electronic components from overheating.
The infrared port provides a cable-free connection for transferring data between your computer and another device, such as a printer, or another computer, that has a compatible infrared port. For information about using the infrared port, see Exchanging data with another computer.
The parallel port allows you to connect parallel devices, such as a parallel printer, or other ECP-compatible devices to the computer.
The volume-control dial allows you to adjust the volume of the computer's speakers
The headphone jack allows you to connect stereo headphones or other audio-output devices, such as external speakers, to the computer. Connecting headphones or other devices to this jack automatically disables the internal speakers.
The microphone jack allows you to connect an external monaural microphone or other audio input device to the computer.
The line-in jack allows you to play and make stereo recordings from external audio devices, such as a stereo system.
The CD-ROM drive allows you to use compact discs (CDs) with the computer. You can use compact discs to install and run programs, play audio, and view video and photo CDs.
Pressing the CD drive eject button allows you to open the CD-ROM drive loading tray.
The CD drive access indicator glows when the CD-ROM drive is accessed.
The CD drive manual eject button allows you to remove a compact disc from the CD-ROM drive when neither AC nor battery power is available.
The USB (Universal Serial Bus) port allows you to connect USB peripherals to the computer.
The PS/2 port allows you to connect an optional PS/2-compatible mouse or external keyboard to the computer. You can use an optional Y-cable to connect a PS/2 mouse and a PS/2 keyboard simultaneously.
The memory module cover provides access to the computer's memory expansion module. For information on inserting a memory module, see Installing a memory module.
The battery cover houses and protects the main battery. The battery cover has an integrated latch that secures the battery to the computer case. For information on replacing the battery, see Changing the battery.
The docking guides assist you in aligning, positioning and securing the computer in the optional docking solution.
The display panel contains the screen and the display panel latch.
The display panel latch slides to the right to release the display panel.
The Satellite 4030CDT and 4060CDT have 13.3 inch diagonal, TFT active matrix color screens, capable of displaying up to 65 thousand colors at 1024 x 768 resolution.
The Satellite 4080XCDT and 4085XCDT have 14.1 inch diagonal, TFT active matrix color screens, capable of displaying up to 65 thousand colors at 1024 x 768 resolution.
The keyboard panel contains the following computer components:
Your Satellite computer comes equipped with a full duplex, 16-bit, ESS Audio Drive« 3D stereo sound system with software-enabled Wavetable synthesis.
The integrated stereo bass reflex speaker system supports sound output for WAV files, MIDI playback, and audio from the CD-ROM drive. They also support external audio input devices such as a tape deck, or stereo tuner connected to the computer through the microphone or line-in jacks.
The 84-key keyboard provides all the functionality of a full-size keyboard. The keyboard has twelve built-in hot-key functions that, when pressed in combination with the Fn key, turn system functions on and off.
For more information on how to use the keyboard, see Using the keyboard.
The AccuPoint comprises three components--the AccuPoint pointing device, the primary Accupoint button and secondary AccuPoint button.
The AccuPoint pointing device combines the functionality of a mouse with the convenience of never having to move your hands from the keyboard.
The primary AccuPoint button works with the AccuPoint pointing device. The primary AccuPoint button is the larger button and corresponds to the primary mouse button.
The secondary AccuPoint button works with the AccuPoint pointing device. The secondary AccuPoint button is the smaller button and corresponds to the secondary mouse button.
For more information, see Using the AccuPoint pointing device.
The keyboard indicators provide information on which keyboard functions are enabled.
The caps lock indicator glows when you press the Caps Lock key. When this light is on, pressing a letter key on the keyboard produces an uppercase (capital) letter. The Caps Lock key does not affect the numeric and character keys.
The cursor control indicator glows when the cursor control overlay is on. When this light is on, pressing an overlay key moves the cursor in the direction indicated by the white arrow or command printed on the left front of the key instead of the letter printed on the top of the key.
The num lock indicator glows when the numeric overlay is enabled. When this light is on, pressing an overlay key produces the grey number printed on the forward edge of the key instead of the letter printed on the top of the key.
The system indicators display the current operating state of your Satellite computer.
The AC power indicator glows when the computer is connected to an external power source.
The on/off indicator glows when the computer is on.
The main battery indicator provides information on the main battery's current charge. This indicator glows green when the battery is fully charged and amber when the battery is charging. The main battery indicator does not illuminate when the computer is running on battery power or when the battery is completely discharged.
The hard disk indicator glows when the hard disk drive is accessed.
The Diskette/CD-ROM indicator glows when the diskette drive or the CD-ROM drive is accessed.
